We asked you about the $5.5 million settlement paid to former Charger Steve Foley.
Steve Foley received the settlement he deserved, but why is the officer still employed? If a $5.5 million dollar mistake was made at most workplaces, someone would be fired. Maybe Metzger should be forced to play the rest of Foley's contract. - Sal, Golden Hill
Why is it that this off-duty police officer can return to being a police officer? Steve Foley can't return as a Charger...and all he got was a 5.4 million dollar settlement for a career ending injury....in my opinion the city of Coronado should have paid out the wazoo!!!!and be renamed to foleyado!!!!! - suspekted, Chula Vista
The officer should be fired. We all know that if Foley were white, he would not be hobbled today. This type of behavior has to stop. - John, San Diego
In my opinion I would say that the football player should have gotten more money. It is true what thay said. The police officer is going back on duty and putting his uniform on and the football player lost his dream. It is very unfair. What I have noticed in San Diego is that the police officers do things without thinking. They take agression with people they shouldn't and take less with people they should. - Giovanni, San Diego
I believe that the settlement amount is unfair and it seems that officer Mansker just got a time out or a slap on the wrist and that's it. I really question our legal system and wonder when Mr. Mansker will end yet another promising career, while he continues to pursue his. - Mrs. W, San Diego
Foley is a criminal. The settlement is upside down. Who won? - LLF, San Diego
Foley could have gotten more. At least we don't have to change our name to "Foley Island." - Alan, Coronado
I know for a fact that if I, as a private citizen, shot another human being, it would be considered attempted murder. An "off-duty" police officer, in my opinion, is also a private citizen. He should be held to the same standard as anyone else. $5.5 million is one thing, where are the criminal charges? - William, Scripps Ranch
I handled thousands of cases involving police for the City of San Antonio and I can tell you this settlement is rediculious. Foley would never have gotten a settlement from us. And the Police Officer could sue the city of Coronado himself. This case was totally mishandled by the City of Coronado. This was stupid. - James, San Diego
It is a disgrace that he gets rewarded for HIS wrongdoing!!!! He broke the law and now profits from his misdeeds. This country is going to hell in a handbasket. - Marie, Normal Heights
Foley's civil case is nothing but Foley trying to blame someone else for his bad decisions to drink and drive. A Police Officer is "on duty" 24 hours a day and Mansker tried to get a uniform Officer to stop Foley but things turned bad real quick. Mansker had no choice to do what he did to protect himself. - Rob, Ramona
I think the city of Coronado should be ashamed to have a officer that would do something illegal and keep him on duty. They admit wrong doing by settling out of court so the public will not hear how wrong the officer was. WHAT A JOKE and they should all be ashamed of themselves for allowing the officer to continue working in any way for the city and especially for the police force. - Todd, Pacific Beach
It seems like Foley manipulated the situation. He ended up getting paid 5.5 millions dollars for drunk driving! Sure, the off duty officer could have handled it better, but the police do things everyday that violate a citizen's rights. Nobody is paying those people huge settlements. Reminds me of the O. J. Simpson case. - Carl, City Heights
I don't think somebody who was driving drunk, jeopardizing the lives of others should get any money. He caused his own medical issues & needs to learn to live with his choice to drive drunk that night. - L.H., South Park
I built the car for Foley. The car is in my driveway right now -- I don't like what happened and I think that cop should lose his job as well, but don't let one cop make all cops bad. I felt myself thinking that way??? - Steve, Bonita
I am alarmed at the poor judgement of the Coronado police in allowing this officer to continue his employment. Clearly, officer Mansker lacks the judgement and restraint necessary for a position of authority. - Terry, San Diego
I think Mr. Foley should have gotten more money because his career is over. Mr. Mansker should not be a police officer anymore. He is over zealous and should not be a one man police force. He needs to understand when not on duty and not in uniform he is like you and me. Too many police officers are getting away with just short of murder these days. With this tragedy and the road rage incident in Oceanside, these police officers need to have the law thrown back at them and made an example of -- to stop this "I am above the law" behavior. - Chris, El Cajon
In the case of Steve Foley vs. city of Coronado, I am surprised they kept a police officer that cost the city millions of dollars on staff. It is scary that crazy police officers can do so wrong and still get away with it, and city is stuck with the bill. - Ladan, Poway
It seems like Foley probably did not get quite enough money considering this injury could have killed him, and ended his career as well as disable him. I am also concerned that the off duty officer who shot Foley was reinstated. It seems like he has a history of being a loose cannon, and being an officer he should understand restraint when pulling out a gun, as well as how scared 'celebrities" have to be of nutcases following them, possibly to kidnap and extrort money, or simply to kill them. - Dennis, Lakeside
I think it is deplorable that the city of Coronado settled for this amount. It should have been five times as much. Foley's career is over, figure the amount of money he would have made throughout the remainder of his career and add to that future medical bills, cost of living increases, etc. The court should have looked at it as if it were a divorce, afford him the kind of life he has grown accustomed to due to his work (footbal) and add those kind of expenses and see what a real settlement figure should look like. If he were of another ethnic group his settlement figure would have been much higher and the so-called off-duty officer should be in jail facing charges of attempted murder! - Michael, El Cajon
$5.5 million is not enough for what that reckless cop did. Obviously, he hasn't received enough training but nowdays the majority of cops think they can do no wrong. This kid is much too young to be a cop and the city of Coronado{which I've belong to for 46 years} should fire him before he screws up again! - Kurt, Coronado
Just so you get my perspective correct, I'm a white male, 50 yrs old, republican and an executive at a medical device firm. I think the Coronado Mayor's statement that the Steve Foley settlement was "fair" is disturbing. The settlement was anything but fair. Steve Foley is permanently disabled and the police officer gets off scot-free. Is there any wonder that black America is disenfranchised and suspicious of its government? That police officer should have been dismissed and never allowed to hold a license for a fire arm again. - Steven, Encinitas
It's unfortunate that Foley got shot, but his actions provoked the incident. He has a problem with authority and has a history of fighting with police. $5.5 million is way too much. Coronado should have paid his hospital bill and for a get well card. That's it! - Roger, San Diego
That three million (after lawyer's fees) will probably be long gone when Foley kills someone while driving drunk. If we're lucky, in a few years, he'll be broke and get arrested holding up a liquor store. At least he might not harm anyone else that way. - Dan, Coronado
The Foley settlement was wrong! When someone uses a vehicle as a weapon, it does not matter if the victim of the weapon is a uniformed or off-duty policeman. I want off-duty policemen to protect me, since on-duty police staff are so thinly staffed and cannot always respond quickly. This ruling encourages off-duty policemen to observe and report crimes in progress, instead of protecting victims. What were the Coronado officials thinking??? This is a very dangerous precedent. - Robert, San Carlos
Mansker came off sounding a bit obsessed with stopping all possible drunk drivers in his off-duty time, but even if he works for the Coronado police for the rest of his life, he will not earn 5.5 million dollars. The admitted drunk driver-Foley is not disabled and could still work somewhere in the sports industry, but will never need to work again if he uses the award wisely. I'm not sure got the worse end of the deal here. - Scott, Lakeside
I think it is wrong of an off duty police officer to persue any person without back-up. Too many wacky people out there and how would you know they are for real! - Connie, Vista
Football players, like Steve Foley, make it in this world based on their athletic skill. When you take that from them they have nothing. No education, no job, no passion. That is why I was outraged to hear the officer who took everything away from this man walk free with his job. The city has made it clear, if you have a badge you can do whatever you want with no consequence. That includes gunning down a man with a nicer car than you. - Paul, Clairemont
I feel the result of the OFF DUTY COP shooting of a EX-Charger player is unfair. As a service member in the U.S Navy (station on North Island) I know when my job begins and when it ends. But "Mr.BAD A** Cop" took the law into his own hands when he shot Mr. Foley, so now the result is another San Diegan shot needlessly. It's bad enough when cops are shooting people that may have a weapon or seem to have a weapon, but now they are shooting any and everyone with or without a weapon. I don't feel safe anymore going to work knowing that "MR. BAD A** Cop" is out there waiting. There is not enough of money to compensate what Mr.Foley lost. - Donald, Escondido
