State Wage Cuts

We asked your views on the Governor's plan to cut state wages.

Tell Arnold to cut the $15 billon we spend on illegal immigrants and you don't have to cut the pay for American citizens. -  James, Banker's Hill

Wouldn't it save much more if the wages of the governor and the state legislatures were cut rather than those that actually do all the work? Their one paycheck is equal to 5-10 state workers yearly income.  -  Michele, Del Cerro

Why isn't the Governator threatening to cut the salaries for members of the legislature that actually have a vote in the buget matter. Why doesn't he take a HUGE pay cut to help the budget?  -  Drea, Del Cerro

if the state really wants to save money and balance the budget..why not cut some salaries of senators and congressmen/women and do not cut wages of ANYONE making $12.00 or less....per hour...gas paid for cars of the "public servants" would probably save way more than cutting the pay of people that don't make that much anyway.  -  Nancy, Chula Vista

Gov. Swarzenegger's plan to cut the pay of public employees is part of a partisan game that uses public employees and their families as bargaining chips. Such action is disrespectful and plays to the partisan bullying that goes on in Sacramento. I hope the legislators who have the public's true well-being in mind are able to hold the line, not allow these people and their families to be put through strife, and pass a budget soon.  -  A., San Diego

I don't support the governors proposal. It is an effort maintain services on the backs of public employees. It's wrong. The republican state legislative leadership needs to act and stop blocking progress with the state budget. Real solutions involve forwarding merit worthy ideas and not taking a 'no' stance on all democratic lead proposals. It takes a team effort to solve the states budget problem.  -  Brandon, Banker's Hill

How does the Govenor really expect people to survive this tough economy on a little over $6/hr. People have mortgages, rent, food, and gas to purchase. All which are not cheap. People will not be able to afford the gas to get to work and might not have a home to go home to after work if their home goes into foreclosure. SDGE, AT&T, the water Co, all do not want to hear "sorry can't pay due to the state budget not being passed". The harder he makes it for people to survive, the longer it will take for this economy to recover!  -  Renee, San Diego

I feel that it's a mistake to take away jobs, and reduce pay for state workers just because elected officials can't do their job's properly. Why don't we take away their pay, they caused the problem. Well. I guess it's what we get for putting a not so great actor in office.  -  Lois, Spring Valley

I do not believe that the cut is fair, even if it saves a billion dollars a month. The cut is out of the question. It is hard enough to live with the salary most government employees recieve currently.  -  Sayed, Spring Valley

It's ridiculous that our legislators cannot pass a budget on time. They know exactly when it is due and how long it takes. If they were in the business world and continuously missed deadlines like this, they would be fired immediately. It's especially bad since they are not the ones that suffer for their inability to do their job. Maybe we should hold them accountable and vote them all out of office.  -  Steve, Scripps Ranch

I fully support the Governor's hard stance on the budget. Drastic times call for drastic measures. Although unfortunate some deep salary cuts in state government agencies will be made it is better than everyone suffering with higher taxes.  -  Stan, Normal Heights
