Oceanside Police Negotiators

We asked about the Oceanside Police Department's handling of a man barricaded inside a home.

I'm wondering why the parents of this mentally unstable young man were away on a ski trip, leaving him home alone. His condition wasn't something that happened over night, and there's responsibility on the parents to ensure their son is looked after, even if he is a young adult.  -  Greg, Oceanside

Tragically disgusting. One need not be an Einstein to conclude the tactics used in this case, i.e., a depressed and suicidal young man, were obviously inappropriate. Common sense was sorely lacking. God bless the family, and God help Oceanside in the probable lawsuit.  -  John, Chula Vista

We need major changes to police policy in San Diego County. First, hearing the treatment of a depressed/suicidal teenager by Oceanside Police negotiators, how can the police not recognize that they're wrong with how they handle that kind of situation? We're an embarrassment across America and the World thanks to Oceanside's actions shown on You Tube now. It's scary that the same day there's the news of the Lemon Grove sheriff who's a known sexual predator by his department and isn't charged for 6mos in this recent assault of a prostitute. Today we are so far away from being America'! s finest city. Change must happen with our police policies so they can regain or maintain the public's trust.  -  Susan, Normal Heights

I believe that once the public can place themselves in the shoes of the officers that are out there for our protection, then they have the right to criticize them. They are doing a job that few of us actually have an inkling of what truly goes on. Because something goes wrong in the eye of the public does not mean that the officers did not give their all. Give them a break.  -  A. Parker, Downtown

It is police officer's duty to protect victims from crimes and protect life. In the case of suicide they should be doing everything in their power to keep a victim from harming himself or herself.  -  Scott, Normal Heights
