We asked what you thought about Prop 8 which is aimed at banning gay marriage.
All Proposition 8 attempts to do is re-affirm what more than 3 out of every 5 Californians stated 8 years ago: that marriage should only be, and be recognized in California only as, being between one man and one woman. This law, approved by multiple millions of Californians, remained on the books until four - read: ONLY 4 - judges decided this year that those multiple millions of Californians were wrong and decided to write a new law themselves, without any input from these millions of Californians. -- ***, Serra Mesa
I support prop. 8. I believe in traditional values for California. The homosexual lifestyle is not beneficial for the good of the people. I find it unacceptable the supreme court used their own will to permit the acceptance of gay marriage rather than the will of the people. Who is going to hold these judges accountable for their actions? America is for the people, by the people. Not for the supreme court. -- Billie, Lakeside
One man & one woman all the way. If marriage isn't one man and one woman, marriage can become just about anything! One man and three women, ect! -- Richard, La Mesa
Gay marriage IS equal rights. Denying gay marriage is like denying black people equal rights. How can people in this day and age still be against gay rights? It's time to move forward with our country. Show the world that the U.S.A. is equal rights for ALL. Prejudice needs to end. -- David, San Diego
Prop 8 restores the definition of marriage that was approved by over 61% of voters. Proposition 8 is NOT an attack on gay couples and does not take away the rights that same-sex couples already have under California's domestic partner law. California law already grants domestic partners all the rights that a state can grant to a married couple. Gays have a right to their private lives, but not to change the definition of marriage for everyone else. -- Ed, Chula Vista
CA. voters made it clear we did not support same sex marriage. Since when can Judges or any official be able to turn over the peoples votes? For or against this issue overturning the people of California's vote jepordizes are in basic right to have every vote matter and the outcome upheld my our Government Officials. Where is the Federal government in this mess? The majorities decision of CA voter is that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Another vote is unfortunately required now since our prior vote really didnt matter..How do we explain this to our kids when we tell the! m how important it is for them to vote and make a difference? -- Del Mar Mom
I support proposition 8. I believe that the people should be able to choose their mate in life, live happy and prosper in society but we have to draw the line and keep the institution of marriage between a man and a women. -- LeighAnne, Carlsbad
Marriage is a right that should be available to all Californians. Those who seek to marginalize gays and lesbians by restricting their freedoms are terribly misguided. -- Eric, North Park
I feel that proposition 8 needs to be recognized as a proposition to make society a better place. Being only 18 years old, I feel that it is important to vote for this Proposition. Marriage has always been a sacred ceremony between man and woman. I support domestic partnerships but I do not support marriage. -- Kaneesha, Escondido
I think that people should mind their own bussiness. I hope to see the day when people dont try to interfear in other peoples lives. If two people of the same-sex want to get married and start a family let them. -- Luis, South San Diego
If true Americans believe in the pursuit of happiness, then why do some people think the gay community shouldn't partake in such beautiful values as well? Opponents of gay marriage who support Prop. 8 use 'family values' as an excuse to mask fear and ignorance. Instead of wasting valuable time and money on making other people miserable, they should take up worthier causes like adoption, tutoring low income students, Veteran and elderly support, etc. Don't tell me this is a free country when some of us are still not free to marry. It's a shame that some Latin American developing countries have legalized gay marriage while many San Diegans want to turn a blind eye to their own neighbors. -- Tommy, Chula Vista
God created man and woman and they were told to go out and multiply. How can same sex support God's will. -- Earthangel
Marriage is right that the state grants to all, not all but gays. When people get married the state of California is marrying you, you can opt to have a religious ceremony to celebrate that union if you choose. The religious celebration is between you and your practicing faith. Those who support Prop 8 have confused the lines of church and state. -- Scott, Normal Heights
I thought that constitutions were supposed to secure rights of citizens, not deny those rights. If gays pay taxes, why should they be denied legal marriage because of a religious controversy? -- David, Normal Heights
It's unfortunate that people who oppose gay marriage feel so threatened.. How does gay marriages affect their lives? All this talk about marriage being "traditional" is interesting...Consideringthat half of all marriages end in divorce in the US, where's the tradition in that? Or is that becoming a new tradition and soon, divorces will be banned as well? Times are changing..I will vote in the November election opposing the gay marriage ban. -- Melissa, UTC
A gay child is entitled to exactly the same rights and privileges, under the United States Constitution; as his or her siblings. They are your children.. they are our children...We must protect their rights to be happy!!! -- Sue and Ernie, Rancho Bernardo
The fact remains that the biblical definition (which is the only definition that matters) of marriage is between a man and a woman. The gay community would like to argue that same sex marriage deserves the same rights because they are just like any "normal" family yet they cannot procreate without the use of modern technology which alone proves it's not "normal". The definition of family is defined as blood relation and is based on genetics gays just don't seem to get it. They can argue all they like but facts are facts. By the way when they marry do they pronounce the union as husband and wife? -- Sanchez, Chula Vista
i dont think that gay marriage should be allowed, there are more important things going on in the world to worry about and i think that the money being raised to pass the law should be used for more important things, such as education. -- Anonymous, Fallbrook
Gay marriage is not about who's right and who's wrong. It's about giving everyone an equal oppertunity to have a happy life. It's about everyone, gay and straight, getting along with each other. Gay marriage will not hurt anyone. Gay marriage can only help us all to become more united. -- Alexis, Mira Mesa
why do people spend their time protesting and trying to ban gay marriage? it doesn't effect you, and it's not hurting anyone. let them be happy, too! -- Heather, San Diego
I think that the ban on gay marraige is a disappointment, people are trying to take away the rights of human beings to get married and share a life together. It just shows that people in general are not comfortable with change. It's a chance for people to be open and honest about who they love, and i for one support gay marraige! -- Nicole, Vista
Supporters of Prop 8 gave trivial reasons for reinstating the ban on gay marriage. They argued that America is losing the traditional idea of a "family" and that educators in the classroom have to refer to parents as just that! Parents! Are educators so busy that they can't make a minor adjustment in their language, an adjustment they should have made years ago when same-sex parents became more common? Can they, or won't they? And who's to say non-traditional "families" are a bad thing. I'm fairly certain that children! are going to be happy in a happy family, gay or straight. Our community needs to be concerned with making changes for the best, to demonstrate tolerance and acceptance. Gay marriage doesn't harm anyone. -- Joan, San Diego
