Plastic Bag Ban

We asked your view on Encinitas becoming the first area city to ban the use of plastic bags.

I think the use of polyethene or plastic bags should not be encouraged. Cloth or other types of reusable bags should be promoted for a cleaner and healthier environment.  --  Seetha, Oceanside

If they're going to ban plastic bags, they need to go one step further and ban balloons. Once the beach parties are over the balloons are left to deflate, and the attached strings get caught up in the seaweed and strangle birds and other beach wildlife. Every single time I go for a walk on my local Encinitas beach, I collect several of these.  --  Elexis, Encinitas

A ban on single use plastic bags was brought into some areas of France about twelve years ago! Everyone got used to it very quickly. I see no reason why it shouldn't work here. Let's catch up on saving the planet!  --  Hazel, El Cajon

I think recycling is the way to go. However, I have to ask this question - What is the difference between the plastic shopping bags and the bags we use for trash? Why is one being banned and the other not?  --  Carl, Chula Vista

I have used canvas bags for years once I was informed that a major ingredient in plastic bags is petroleum. By reducing our use of plastic bags, we open up more petroleum for transportation uses, thus reducing the cost of gasoline.  --  Mike, Ocean Beach

I think its a good idea to ban plastic bags, or at least let the stores charge a few cents for each one the customer uses that he or she doesn't bring in themselves. I have been recycling my bags at the entrance to my local supermarket where they provide bins, as well as bringing my own cloth bags the stores have been promoting and selling. I believe it can make a huge impact if we have to pay for the bags we use.  --  Kat, Rancho San Diego

I think it's great. This will really get the ball rolling on more bans at other stores. Obviously a lot of people do not want to change unless they have to, and now they don't have a choice, which is actually a good thing. At least someone is implementing some change.  --  Johnny, El Cajon

I am all for recycling and saving the environment. However, I am concerned about the possibility for plastic shopping bags being banned. I have a cat and I reuse my plastic shopping bags to clean her litter box. I know dog owners who also use plastic bags to clean up after their pets. It worries me that I may have to buy plastic bags just to throw away my cat's litter. I wonder if there is an alternate solution to this? I understand that there are a lot of people who don't have pets, so for them it makes sense to have reusable shopping bags if they're just throwing away the plastic ones.  --  Kassie, Mission Hills

If the city of San Diego bans all plastic bags, what are they proposing I use to pick up my dogs waste? I doubt my neighbors would appreciate it if I leave it in their yard. Should I carry a little business card I can set beside it and say "Sorry, the city won't let me pick it up?"  --  Jamie, Mira Mesa

I think it's rediculous. Are they trying to push everyone out of California. if someone's wants to use platic bags they should be abled to. I'm against this and I hope it does not go through.  --  Kendra, Alpine

Are you kidding me. If San Fran. is for it, it has to be a stupid idea.  --  James, Bankers Hill

I am for the bag ban! I have sent letters to San Diego city council members recently asking them to ban and tax the bags. Whole cities and countries have banned banned plastic bags successfully.  --  Lisa, Bankers' Hill

I agree with the plastic ban. I think everybody should use reusable bags. Its a great step towards going green!  --  Kayte, Little Italy

Yay!!! I'm so excited people are taking a step towards being eco-friendly. Thank you Encinitas for setting an amazing example. I love the earth.  --  Jenna, Pacific Beach

I was wondering what senior citizens are going do for manageable bags for carrying various items including medications, groceries, and etc. These plastic bags have handy handles; are easy to store; and the bags are just the right size and shape for carrying small loads of various items. Lastly, they make great trash bags. By taking away the plastic grocery bags, seniors will have to buy garabage bags and other than the ones we get at the store the bags do not have handles.  --  Ruth, Escondido

I have not seen or heard of any provisions or exemptions for the handicapped. Plastic bags afford us an efficient measn of transporting many items with ease and saftey. The plastic bag can be used several times for this same task. Don't forget the Handicap if Encinitas passes this ordinance.  --  Byron, Oceanside

To use reusable bags would just be a little change in everybody's life - but it would be a great step toward a healthier planet. So many European countries already banned plastic bags - and nobody's complaining!  --  Verena, Carmel Valley
