Tuition for Illegal Immigrants

We asked your views about a new court ruling on college tuition.

I think it's unfair that they are going to take away financial aid help for illegal immigrants. They are going to school and can't work due to not having a social security number. I think it's just unfair.  --  Roxana, San Diego

Part of the reason this state is in a financial crisis is that illegal immigrants from all countries are given substantial financial assistance. If you are not a citizen of this country then you should not be receiving the benefits of being one. Granted the process of citizenship needs to be re-evaluated but if illegal immigrants put half as much effort into improving their own countries as they put into coming to the U.S. illegally and crumbling our economy, then they may find they can change their own situation for the better without forcing hardship on others.  --  Laura, Poway

I find this story confusing... how does someone who is here illegally enroll in college in the first place? And how can they be elligible for government-funded financial aid?! That is completely unfair to those of us who worked our way through college, paying what we owed. I went to grad school overseas (on a legal student visa) and I paid PLENTY.  --  K., University Heights

I NEVER paid lower tuition for college because i was not from the states. I had to pay $200-$300 "out of state tuition" on top of the regular tuition, thats not including books or materials. I had to work over time in order to pay my tuition. People might want to earch the actual amoutn that we pay for school.  I think people need to be given the right information.  --  Juan, Downtown

Hmm, the optimum word here is illegal. Shouldn't that person be sent back to the country from which they came? By no means should these students be allowed to receive aid or lower tuition, they are in our country illegally. Even your station should have reported the illegal person to authorities. Shame on you and shame on the universities for lowering tuition for these people who are breaking our laws!  --  Margaret, San Diego

It is unfair for those students who come from out of state and are forced to pay for Out of State Taxes. Illegals come from out of the country.... Illegally... I don't see why they should have to pay a tax as well. Either take all college states taxes away or tax all those foreign to california who attend college   --  Teddy

I have mentored an undocumented youth from the age of 10 to 17 years old. She was brought her illegally from Mexico by relatives and had no decision in the making. She grew up very poor and was abused while in Mexico. Her life in America has been positive and she is now a senior in high school at a very good high school. She knows her only future is with a college education and works hard in school. Having undocumented young adults like her pay out of state tuition is not fair because people need to keep in mind a lot of these youth were brought her illegally as ! children. The only future for them is to get an education and find a way to become a citizen on their own. I am definetely against charging undocumented youth out of state tuition.  --  Michelle, Mission Valley

Any one in this country illegally should not get any benefits that are given to U.S. Citizens. If they are illegal, they should be deported and not allowed to benefit from U.S. programs. My Great Grandfather came thru Ellis Island and had to work hard to become a legal U.S. citizen. I will support and applaud anyone who immigrates here LEAGALLY. They disserve all of the benefits of being a U.S. citizen.  --  Mike, Escondido

Has everyone lost all common sense? "Undocumented"?, no they're ILLEGAL. Why are US Citizens being openly discriminated against by illegal aliens and their supporters? Your interviewee openly admitted to being here illegally for 7 years, no Social Security Number, hence she pays NO taxes. When is ICE going to open an office as San Diego State? When did right become wrong and wrong became right?  --  Riggs, Encinitas

It doesn't make sense that we illegal immigrant college students should pay more for college tuition, when in fact we are working as hard, or even harder, than those students with their U.S. citezenship. I've been here in the U.S. my entire life, and i don't seem to understand why i should pay more for tuition, when in fact i have scored higher than those students who were born here, and take school for granted.  --  Stephanni, Chula Vista

If we can not give money to allow US citizens to attend college first, we should not give any allowance to immigrants. Sorry, taxes are taxes.  --  J.K., Mission Valley

Tuition is base on one's state residency. Whether a student is undocumented or not, if you're living in CA for a certain amount of years, you'll pay the Resident Fee. Undocumented students from out of state will pay foreign tuition fee. I could of never had afforded CSUSM without paying the resident tuition fee.  --  Luis, San Marcos

I feel that it's really unfair of what their thinking of doing about increasing the tuition money for illegal immigrants. They don't get financial aid or any state help, plus they can not work because they don't have a social security. I think they only think they can get is pell grant but it's not much and it all depends on grades. This will just lead to many of them dropping out because they cannot afford it and it will effect our economy. If they are showing that they are capable to succedd with their grades I beleive they should be granted the financial assistance. I was once an illegal! immigrant and now I get all the financial help that I need but I know before I had to struggle a lot more to pay for books and tuition and to the out of atate students, there is so many financial help and scholarships out there that they can qualify but some people are just to lazy or unaware of them.  --  Veronica, Vista

I think that it is really unfair to the people of the the state. i don't think that people from another country should be be given a less fee because it is unequal and unethical. I Believe that citizen should be the ones paying less   --  Justin, Chula Vista

What can I say, I'm confused. This is a tough situation for a couple of reasons. They are undocumented, but the government is using their parents for cheap labor. Many students can't get into their college choice, but does it mean that they should be discriminated against. There are many low life Citizens, yet, these people are willing to go beyond what others regret. What I will say is that "if our government uses their parents, then I am for the decision." Their money is as green as ours. Go USA! --  Jose, National City

I was stunned to find that "illegal immigrants" have been receiving 'tuition breaks' to attend SDSU. If they are, by definition, "Illegal", why would they get a preference over legal US citizens? And why would our schools be further funding their lives when they are, according to the law, not allowed to be here?  --  Deb, Carlsbad

It is a travesty that any US citizen who's here from out of state is charged far more for tuition than someone who is in this country illegally. Our tax dollars should not be subsidizing the education of people that aren't supposed to be here in the first place.  --  Roger, Valley Center

If you don't have a social security number then how are they going to school in this country and getting aid? As a student i cannot get aid and someone who isn't even a citizen can? The student should take initiative in becoming a citizen before going to school in our country. its not fair to other students.  --  Steffanie, Oceanside

i dont think they should be allowed to even be in school. they are illegal!! what is happening to our country? there are students from california and other states that can not get aid at all. being illegal should automatically disqualify those people from going to school or even be in my country  --  Austin, Oceanside

I find it truly unfair how illegal immigrants are able to get more benefits than legal residence or US citizens residing in the US or even, just in California. I'm a single mother of 3 and for the last 6 years I put myself to school while working and paying for regular tuition fees. And then I hear how illegal residence pay less tuition? Omg!I pay state and federal taxes, while the illegal resident persons do not. We, the taxpayers, should get the breaks and pay lower tuition fees...in other cases, be able to use other medical insurance benefits, and/or any other bene! fits that illegal residence seems to benefit from that legal residence or US citizen persons do not. Legal residence and US citizen people are also feeling the pain of the economic crisis and has to work and survive in this life. It seems they get more help than the people who pay taxes in this state and in this country. Why do people who came to the US illegally benefit more? I find this totally wrong.  --  Ann, San Diego

Anyone who is in the US illegally should be deported. Why should we be spending State Tax Dollars on Non-US Citizens. We do not have enough educational funds to waste them.  --  Lynda, Santee

It's outrageous that the Democrats in the state legislature are giving away California taxpayers' money to illegal aliens. That money should be used to reduce tuition for our children and fellow Californa residents, or to improve the quality of the schools.  --  Bob, University City

I think that Illegal Immigrants should not get any breaks on tuition because they are not even part of this country and they get to pay less than people that are from out of state. That is redicullious. I do not feel bad for them because they cant work for their tuition since they don't have a social security number. If they want to be here and have the benefits that we have they should do it the right way and if they dont do it the right way i think they should leave.  --  Lucas, Serra Mesa

I think it's terrible how our government slaps us in the face like that. If they cared about us (legal Americans)as much as they care about people from other countries we would be much better off.  --  Gary, La Costa

How much they pay is not the issue, the fact that they are illegally here and allowed to go to school is the issue.  --  Phil, San Diego

Why does the state school system even admit illegal aliens? These schools are for the higher education of our citizens or those who have come into this country with the appropriate visas, permits, etc... These illegal alien/students are breaking the laws and should be deported!  --  Eric, Solana Beach

I served my country for over 20 years in the military and paid my taxes and it is wrong when my children have to take loans out to pay for school but illegals prosper from others hard work.  --  David, Chula Vista

i think that illegal immigrants who are currently attending college deserve the right to attend a low finacia aide because they are already having a hard time and it's not fair to them to pay a higher tuition  --  Jose, Escondido

It is unfair for "Undocumented" students to pay more money for tuition. If they don't have a Social Security # they don't have a chance to work, which means that all their money has to come from scholarships. Out of state students should quit complaining after all they do have a chance to work.  --  Angelica, Imperial Beach

I believe that the illegal alien students should not be given discounts to attend California colleges. Our state should not pay to provide higher education to illegals. If we have that much money, lets lower the costs for our California residents. I would much rather pay to send our own kids to college that might not otherwise be able to attend because the costs are too high. This state and this country need to start taking care of our own before we take care of the rest of the world!  --  Julie, San Diego

Illegal aliens should not be allowed to be in this country in the first place. This country should take the same actions as most countries do with respect to illegal aliens, to wit, deportation.  --  Brian, Solana Beach

I think education should be accesible for all US students, as well as foreign students. Ultimately educations is what will provide the tools for these students to be able to succesfully acquire a job. I think the US should be more like the european community were people can freely move around, work, attend school and we shoul get away from the racism and discrimination that hispanics are a target of. USA is a contry built of migration and cultural difference and I think we should embrace that, let's get rid of the barriers for education.  --  Nancy, Chula Vista

People openly violating federal immigration law being treated the same as US citizens who are legal residents of California is a travesty of justice. Arrest these people and deport them. Terminate with prejudice the federal employees who are paid to, but are refusing to enforce the law. Specifically identifying those individuals charged with, but who refuse to do their jobs by having illegal aliens arrested and deported is a first step in routing out corrupt government officials which will help pave the way to a better society than the one we have deteriorated into.  --  Ed, Scripps Ranch

I am a student at Kaplan College and if I transfer to another College or University I will have to pay out of state tuition due to being a resident of Alaska. Out of state tuition even at a community college is about $5,000 more. To give illegal immigrants in state tuition isn't fair at all for people who are already citizens. American citizens already have to pay A LOT for tuition as it is and have to find ways to get funding or a way to pay for tuition. For example, with the FASFA, (one of the main federal financial aid options) you can only make so ! much a year to even qualify. Regardless if the immigrants have to make certain requirments with going to high school for 3 years or so etc, they should have to go through everything that a U.S. citizen have to do in order to go to school. Why should they be able to get funding if they can't obtain a social security number and don't pay taxes.  --  Stephanie, Vista

Finally, someone had the b.... to take this up and speak out. How can people who break the law to enter this country get the right to free education, while legal residents and citizens have to struggle desperately to pay for our kids education. Our generousity and kindness towards others sometimes cost us more than we bargain for. Now that we have got this started, let's also look at abuse with the over crowded conditions in our Elementary and High School by illegal immigrants. Maybe our Govenor will be able to balance the budget with all the money saved from paying to educate people who do not respect our laws and our country.  --  MJ, Chula Vista

Give me a break. Illegal US students attending Mexican universities wouldn't be afforded ANY breaks for tuition. They'd be thrown in jail.  --  Kyley, UTC

any illeagals shouldn't be in this country in the first place. As a us citizen paying taxes i should be the first in line for lower tuition costs and a resident also. Out os state student should pay higher tuition costs  --  Dave, Penasquitos

I cannot believe the comments in this blog.I invite people to experiment some of the living conditions of many of what you call "ilegal immigrants" and then you would understand why they follow the american dream to come here and live in shaks, sharing a midsize room with other 12 people in the same situation and that is even better than the precaurious conditions they would live back in their country.I think we are all selfish pigs and unless we experienced those conditions we would not be able to understand why migration occurs, but with the way the economy is going we are not that far. And to clarify "ilegal immigrants" are hard working people trying to survive, in the majority of the cases scared of accesing any public funding for fear of deportation. In this particular instanc! e I applaude the fact that they want to pursue an education and not depend on the goverment such as many "US citizens". To finalize I think all students should pay the same fees and not make this an atact to migrants.Ask the government to stop the war and stop blaiming immigrants for the economy going bad.  -- NP, Chula Vista

Please contact your U.S. Representative through the Capitol Switchboard (202-224-3121) and ask him/her to do everything possible to stop the passage of three bills in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday: H.R. 5882, a bill that would add an additional 550,000 permanent green cards annually; H.R. 5924, which would add 20,000 additional foreign nurses per year for three years (plus their families); and H.R. 6020. Remember: 342,000 American jobs were eliminated throughout the economy last month. And, the number of people officially unable to find work rose to 592,000. Nevertheless, the House Judiciary Committee will consider a bill (H.R. 5882) to increase the number of employer-sponsored visas by 550,000 next year.
