We asked your views on complaints of sick animals adopted from California Pets.
Pet Stores are looking a lot like used car lots. Unless you are an expert on dogs, most people make their decisions based on aesthetics. You never know what's really "underneath the hood." -- Jorge, South Bay
If what the owner of the pet store said is true...that they don't get their puppies from a puppy mill...where do they come from??? -- Lori, Tierrasanta
I love dogs but when i go into a pet store and see the cages that the dog are in ...they don't look happy i think the dog are just as important. Dogs need care just as well as we do. Take care of the animals as you would a family member. -- Justin, Chula Vista
Thank you for doing this story. It is about time that someone exposes the horrible condition of the puppies being sold by California Pets. This problem is only going to continue until someone truly does a deep investigation to uncover the true place where these puppies come from - Puppy Mills! ! No one should ever buy a puppy from this store. -- Martin, Escondido
I think that people should not BUY a pet when there are so many animals in our local shelters. With the puppy mills and over breeding you are sure to get a pet that has or will have serious health problems. If you do want to BUY a pet do your research an buy from a well known breeder. All! of my pets are of the Heinz variety and have been very healthy. Please adopt!! -- Annette, Oceanside
That's absolutely heart breaking. California Pets says that they will work with the family to replace the dog...but how can you replace a living, breathing creature? It can't be replaced. -- Christine, Carmel Valley
I think the pet stores should work with shelters and provide animals thru those avenues. There are plenty of breeders all over that can provide pure breed dogs/cats and an over abundance of homeless ones, even more so with all the foreclosures. I've gotten depressed seeing these dogs in too small cages at this pet store as well. -- Desiree, Carlsbad
Ok, the Dow fell 449 points today, there was an attack in front of the U.S. embassy in Yemen, people get stabbed at trolley stations and the lead story is about sick puppies. Are we so out of touch with the rest of the country that, even with the world around us in chaos, our lead story is about sick puppies? You have got to be kidding me! -- Greg, Otay Ranch
I was at California Pets this weekend and noticed a bulldog puppy with very labored breathing and mucus/snot covering his nose. He was also completely out of it and obviously very sick. I brought this to the attention of one of the employees and he responded! by saying "that's just how bulldogs are". I told him that I own two bulldogs and that's not how they are, that dog was very sick. The employee responded by shrugging his shoulders and walking off. The condition of all of the puppies in California Pets is completely disgusting. Hopefully people will see this news cast and decide to adopt from a shelter or purchase their next puppy from a reputable breeder. -- Mariam, Carlsbad
i am 24 years old, i am mexican, i love animals and i can belive people is horrible with animals, how they can use animals as an objects, animals have feelings, they need respect, love and care. That store must be closed, people shuld adopt pets in shelters too, they are waiting for your family, if you continus buying in pets stores the stupid people is going to use poor animals as an object just for get money!!!! be better person, if you do well you are going to be fine!!! -- Daisy, Fashion Valley
There are so many stray animals on the streets and in shelters that buying a pet seems irresponsible in a way. Breeders and pet stores keep bringing in new animals decreasing the chance for strays to have a good home. -- April, Chula Vista
There are several dogs and puppies available in the county shelters and rescues that there is no reason to buy a dog. -- Heather, El Cajon
I have been visiting the California Pet store in Carlsbad over the past six months in order to purchase a pet. Unfortunately, there have been many ocassions when I felt that the puppies were not being taken care of. One visit over the summer, left me angry and to the point of contacting the humane society. I walked into the store and they literally had no a/c on and the poor puppies were laying lifeless and many of them had diarrhea and seem to be vomiting due to heat. The smell of the store was absolutely unbearable. I don't know if they are buying their puppies from mills but I would say that the puppies at the Carlsbad location seem to be neglected. -- Rae, Carlsbad
It so sad that poeple are buying animails like they are some kind of item, even with thousands of wonderful dogs in shelters. it sounds like some treat buying a puppy from a pet store, like buy a stero. treating the life of a dog like and object. these poeple should reconsider why they what a pet! they seemed more concerned with losing their money rather than the heatlh of the dog. -- Peter, Santee
I frequent the North County Fair mall and I can tell you the puppies in this store do not look healthy or happy. The worker's in this establishment are not educated on the animals they are selling. I can only beg the public to not support this organization and DO NOT buy a puppy from them! -- Judy, Poway
This is not surprising to me. We have been following them off/on for the past several years. We have seen several Bernese Mountain Dogs there & have too been informed that they came from puppy farms not puppy mills! I want to know what the difference is. The employees! could not tell us anything. Beware, it's not just California Pets, but many other pet stores too. If you must purchase, then find a reputable breeder. Otherwise, there are hundreds of pets that need to be rescued. Check petfinder.org. Do your homework before getting a pet & be a responsible owner. -- Patrick, Bonsall
The illness mentioned in the story(Coccidia) is a common parasite in puppies or dogs that are kept in groups. Pet stores are not the only place they are found. People are just as likely to have a dog become ill from Coccidia that is adopted from a shelter. The stress from moving to a new ho! me is normally what causes puppies to become sick from it. Also there are more "Good" pet stores in San Diego that obtain their puppies from local families and breeders then their are "bad" pet stores that obtain their puppies from "mills". -- David, San Diego
Why are people still buying puppies from pet stores? It is not a secret that a lot of these stores buy their puppies from puppy mills. There are so many unwanted pets that are in good health that need a home at the local animal shelters. They are not that expensive, they are already spayed/neut! ered, have all of their shots. All they want and need are good loving homes. Instead these people go to these "pet stores", buy these sick animals and then ask, why. Wake up people and get a clue. -- Barbara, El Cajon
Balanced views??? You played California Pets as the villain. I know for a fact that the pet store has done every thing possible to resolve these issues. The owners of the pets are idiots, they would rather whine to a p.o.s. news show than work with the pet store to resolve the issues. I'll watch channel 8 from now on!!!!! -- Erik, Escondido
I worked at California Pets for nearly two years. I can not say that the puppies there were never sick, although Joe Shamore and all the staff did ensure that all puppies got adequate health care and were treated as soon as they showed any symptoms of an illness. Two of my dogs came from California Pets, one of which I purchased prior to becoming an employee, and they have never been ill. Puppies are like children, they will get sick. We can not say that the majority of the puppies from California Pets are sick because that is an untrue statement. I now work at a vet hospital and we see numerous amounts of pupp! ies that are sick. Needless to say they don't come from California Pets but rather what we like to call "reputible breeders". -- Aida, Oceanside
My sister works for the county as an RTV - and we all have a bumper sticker that says; " Don't Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die". There are WAY too many animals in the County Shelters that need homes, be they cats or dogs, or etc. GO to your local county shelters for a pet. They are waiting for a home. -- Lori, La Mesa
I wanted to respond to your story about the puppies from California Pets that have been sick and dying within days of going home with new owners. I don't know why anyone would pay $1100-1200 for a dog at a pet store when thousands of unwanted pets are euthanized in the county every year. I am a 12 year owner of a "pound puppy", and he has been the best pet anyone could ever ask for. Mine is a mixed breed which are overall healthier than purebloods due to lack of inbreeding and greater genetic variety. However if someone has their heart set on a particular type of pet! , almost all breeds have rescue organizations dedicated to saving unwanted or abandoned animals. These organizations and the SPCA are dedicated to the animals first, unlike pet stores which are in first priority businesses, dedicated to padding their owners pockets. Adopting an animal is much more cost effective than buying at a pet store, the animals are all health screened and vaccinated, and new pet owners can rest assured that their money is going to support a good cause. Please encourage your viewers to look at their local (and countywide!) shelters and research other rescue organizations before looking at a pet store! Thank you!!! -- Brittany, Oceanside
I saw your story regarding California Pets and the individual you showed as the owner is only the manager of this store, NOT the owner. I wonder why the real owner is not willing to put her face on camera and face the media questions? Probably because her puppies are sick and ! unhealthy, and they do come from puppy mills. I ask channel 6 to do a bit more investigation on this story and expose the truth about this organization that supports the sad business of puppy mills. -- Franklin, Rancho Bernardo
My father recently bought a puppy from California Pets. He had to take the puppy to the vet a few days later because he had kennel cough that developed into pneumonia. I am amazed to find that there are other people who have had the same problem with dogs purchased from this pet store. ! I thought my father's experience was just an unfortunate fluke, but now I wonder just how many people have had dogs become sick just after they brought them home. I would advise anyone purchasing any animal from a pet store to keep a close eye on them to catch any illnesses early on. -- Alycia, Escondido
There are a few very good pet stores here in San Diego that sell puppies. They get them from families and breeders here in San Diego and take very good care of their puppies. -- John, San Diego
I watched your story on the sick puppies and I believe those Pet stores should be put out of business. Frist of all, those poor dogs, they never get any exercise, at all and second they are way over priced. I recently went to the pet store in Parkway Plaza, El Cajon and spoke to a young girl that works there and asked if they get exercised and she said never! I think we need to stop buying from them and put out of business. Poor Dogs!!! -- Michelle, Santee
There are so many stray animals on the streets and in shelters that buying a pet seems irresponsible in a way. Breeders and pet stores keep bringing in new animals decreasing the chance for strays to have a good home. -- April, Chula Vista
I bought my cat from California Pets and they were so helpful that I will buy from them again. I ABSOLUTELY HATE what you said about them. I researched their breeders and they are not puppy mills. They are private breeders. Channel 6 sucks in reporting such issues. Can I really trust you with the news. Because I have a contract with Cal Pets stating how the animals are covered in case they are sick. BTW Kennel cough is common amoung puppies. It is like say OMG I have the common cold, I must be defective. Do your research and get it right. Well I guess I cannot trust you and yo! ur "unbiased" news. Did you guys covered the upset pet owner's contract and what the owner did? I think not. Review the contract and see if that idiot did anything that Cal pets required to do. If you were a company would you take the word of the customer or the invoice of the vet? Channel 6 sucks, California Pets rule!! Joe sold me my cat and provided me all the information I needed and I still call the store for advise and they are so great that several of my family members bought from escondido and carlsbad. They are the greatest pet store in the world. They are the best. Why are you bashing this company when you just interviewed one customer, should you interview other customers before blabbing your mouth to the san diego audience? I hate your news really I do, because you never report on the good news, just the bad news -- Mario, Escondido
I watched your story on sick puppies tonight and it felt like de ja vu. I purcashed a female matlese puppy from the California Pets in Escondido on June 9, 2008. She has pretty much been on medication ever since. When we took her to Monhacky for the initial exam i was told she had kennel cough and tested positive for round worm. We were given medication for those issues. When i took her to the vet in my neighborhood to re-test her for round worm, she came back negative for round worm but positive for giardia. Then we got rid of the giardia to find out she had toxcidia. She then tested positive! again and most recently tested positive for giardia and two forms of toxcidia. Since we purchased this puupy, we have not had one fecal test come back negative. I will never buy from Califonia Pets again. -- Jennifer, Oceanside
