We asked you about the denial of the Medal of Honor to the family of a San Diego Marine killed in action.
out rage about peralta not geting medal of honor! Mexican Americans have a long proud history of fighting for this country. First we are not promoted to officers, then Ken Burns completely ignores our proud history and now Peralta denied Medal of Honor. Enough! Basta ! He will get medal, he's earned it. -- Enrique, San Diego
Honestly, what does the Pentagon gain from taking a dead man his award. As long that you die protecting your country and fellow comrades it shouldn't be a debate what type of medal he/she will get. It's not like they can take it with them. -- Jason, Linda Vista
Didn't the family Peralta know you have to be white to receive the medal of honor. That's Uncle Sam for you! -- Irusta
Just curious, how many have received the Medal of Honor, and what is their scenario. What Sgt. Peralta did, sacrificing his life to save his fellow marines, seems Medal of Honor worthy to me. However, I am not familiar with the criteria used to bestow the honor. -- Joyce, Carlsbad
I am a retired Marine and I am saddened how they dishonored this true heroe that sacrificed his life for his fellow Marines and Sailors. They have dishonored his family which receive special educational and VA benefits. The Navy Cross is not disrespectful but personally I feel Sgt Peralta and his family deserve better. Semper Fi -- Hakim, San Diego
Sgt Peralta deserves to get the medal of honor for his selfish heroism in Iraq. This downgrade is just another example of the political game. God bless the Peralta family. -- Barry, San Diego
I was there with Sgt. Peralta when he had given his life for his Marines. He more than deserves the Medal of Honor for his selfless act, Sgt. Peralta had gone above and beyond the call of duty, and to this day it plays back in my head and makes me sick knowing that the goverment thinks Sgt. Peralta and his family doesn't deserve the honor. -- Jonathan, Camp Pendleton
My heart goes out to the mother of the lost Marine because I have lost a loved one during the war too. However, what's the different of which Medal of Honor matter? It does not bring back her death son so why family member must challenge the Pentagon.. I would think the family should use the time to grief, slowly should try to move on with life and remember the good times not the bad times. The Family mentioned it doesn't matter but then turn around hired an attorney to challenge. That's something I don't understand!!! Shame on this attorney takes advantage of her grieving time. Did the attorney guarantee! the family our hero will get the right medal?? If not, then what, he will not charge his fees??? -- Christina, San Diego
I highly believe this young man deserves to be recognized for what he has done, just like his mother stated "i do not care about the medal i just want my son back.." it is true the medal will not bring her son back, but he deserves to be noticed for what he did for our country, he deserves the medal and his family must be very proud. -- Juan
I believe that the Secretary of Navy downgraded Sgt Peralta's award to a Navy Cross because he was not a U.S. Citizen. I too served in The Marine Corps as a non U.S. Citizen and know that our sacrifices to this country are often ignored because of the fact that we are citizens of other countries. Sgt Peralta is a true hero and deserves to be recognized as such. This is also our country. -- David, San Diego
Does this sound familiar? *Exerpt from Congressional Medal Of Honor Society* While the SEALs vigilantly watched for enemy activity, an insurgent threw a hand grenade from an unseen location, which bounced off Petty Officer Monsoor's chest and landed in front of him. Although only he could have escaped the blast, Petty Officer Monsoor chose instead to protect his teammates. Instantly and without regard for his own safety, he threw himself onto the grenade to absorb the force of the explosion with his body, saving the lives of his two teammates. By his undaunted courage, fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of certain death, Petty Officer Monsoor gallantly gave his life for his country, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. R.I.P all service personal that paid the ulitimate price for our freedom. -- Jesse, Chula Vista
I think that all our soilders are heros ...he saved all their lives how ungreatful they owe it to him. at least they get to go home and see their families. -- Justin, Chula Vista
I belive that sergeant Rafael Peralta should have been awarded the medal of honor, instead of the navy cross, for he did do the ultimate sacrifice of using his own life to save his platoon,i belive he was a true hero to all of us -- Miguel, San Diego
Why didn't the Pentagon award him the Medal Of Honor. If he would have not jumped on the grenade all of his platton would have been gone. Its not ok for the pentagon to give him the 2nd highest rank he deserves better. -- Fernando, Golden Hill
My thoughts are with that family for their loss. I too have friends and family members serving in most branches of the military and have had experianced some losses. One of which did a similar act, saving not only his buddies, but innocent women and children. I believe the family should accept the cross with honor and not add scandal and lawsuits to his heroic act. -- Elkie, San Marcos
A slap to the face? That's an understatement. To not honor Sgt. Rafael Peralta with the medal honor is a dagger to the heart. It is saddening that a military bureaucracy wouldn't honor this young man. I wonder if a son of theirs sacrificed his life in a similar fashion would they have downgraded the honor? What if the fallen Marine had a different last name and complexion? RIP Sgt. Peralta. -- Ivan, National City
