Assault Rifle Ban

We asked for your opinions about a proposed ban on assault rifles?

The Supreme Court recently upheld the 2nd Amendment right of individual citizens to keep and bear arms. Mexico's inability to controll their drug cartels should not restrict our ability to exercise our 2nd Amendment rights. In fact, the illegal activities of Mexican drug cartels and Mexican smugglers act to justify the right of private citizens to protect themselves from these heavily armed and agressive criminal organizations. -- Eric

Why isn't anyone addressing the real issue..Mexicos inability or refusal to deal with their drug dealers? I find it incredible that this administration is so big on abortion, the killing of unborn children but they are quick to remove something from the market that kills. -- Tony

It's unfortunate that during a time of economic crisis our president wants to make an irresponsible move like this. I think it would be more prudent to repair our broken economy first, then worry about passing faulty gun control legislation designed to fix another nation's problems. It won’t work. Criminals will always get guns, even in a country that bans them. -- J

Criminals are going to get the weapons either way. I think it's crazy to belive that this would fix the problems in another country. Our constitution was written for a reason, and it seems to me that some in the goverment feel like that means nothing anymore. Our country has a lot bigger problems to worry about then weapons control. I can't even belive with our economic crisis our president is worried about gun control. -- Brad

One day a news medium will finally mention that "assault rifle" means one thing, and "assault weapon" is a made-up, meaningless term that roughly translates to "scary looking gun." Won't it be wonderful when the 20,001st gun law makes gun crime non-existent, like illegal drugs, underage drinking, and robbery? Oh, wait ... -- Dan

If I supported the CRAZY spending polices of Obama and the Dems I would want gun control to. -- James

I know there is no need for anyone to own a weapon such as a gun. We should have hunting people check out rifles/guns when hunting. They are the only ones who only for that reason would even need one. -- Rosa

Do you know the difference between a citizen and a subject?  Citizens own guns.

Why do we have a 2nd ammendment?  A.  for hunting   B.  for self protection   C.   For a national guard   D.  To overthrow the government should it become oppressive.  Correct answer is D.

Two resently released convicts kick in your door.  It's a home invasion.  They intend to beat you, torture you, rape your wife and daughters, then burn them alive while tied to a bed (True story happened in Ct last year).   What do you do?
A.  You own a gun.  You shot both of them to death and save        your family.
B.  You don't own a gun.  You do whatever they tell you to and your family dies.

Liberty is not given.  You must take it by force and defend it with force.  When you no longer care enough to do so it will soon be taken from you.  If you don't own a gun, you are a victom waiting to happen.

Anyone wanting to ban so-called assault weapons is against the 2nd amendment, even if unwittingly. There was no such term in common use until anti-2A groups created it.

The term is now used to identify common semi-automatic rifles, which although military in appearance, are only semi-automatic, not capable of fully automatic fire of which military weapons are capable. Because these rifles have a menacing appearance, they are excellent target of proposed gun bans, which fact anti-gun folks use to create laws which are cynical, incremental, and disingenuous infringements on our right to keep and bear arms.

This point leaves aside the fact that one of the many reasons our founders saw fit to include the Second Amendment in our Bill of Rights, was as a safeguard against future tyranny, both foreign and domestic. As Justice Scalia put it recently n the recent Heller vs. D.C. decision:

"It may well be true today that a militia, to be as effective as militias in the 18th century, would require sophisticated arms that are highly unusual in society at large. Indeed, it may be true that no amount of small arms could be useful against modern-day bombers and tanks. But the fact that modern developments have lim  ited the degree of fit between the prefatory clause and the protected right cannot change our interpretation of the right. "

This writer further believes that the although the government has shown that it is likely, over time, to develop a greater willingness to infringe on 1st (Speech), 2nd (Bearing Arms) and 4th (Search and Seizure), that it may be a long time before our government may have the stomach to infringe on these rights, when doing so requires them to turn their arms against a law abiding, armed populace.

In short, so-called assault weapons in the hands of law abiding folks (and yes, there are millions of them) are the final gatekeeper which secures and protects the rest of the guarantees enumerated in the Bill of Right for our great grandchildren.

Only an IDIOT would agree to banning guns--edward is correct; the 2nd ammendment was written so that an oppressive, out of control government should be overthrown if needed--also, rosa, you are a effing stooge:  you shouldn't be trusted with a gun; you would only hurt your fool self...but DON'T take MY rights away, because you are a dummy....
