Miss California Question

We asked what you think about Miss California's comments during the Miss USA Pageant.

I Do not feel as though there was anything wrong with her response. She was asked a question and she answered it honestly, and according to what she believe. Her response should have been accepted without prejudice. We cannot not expect someone to answer a question according to our belief. -- John

What the California beauty contestant said was her opinion and the opinion of the majority of Californians (twice voted). Why T.V. stations try to endorse the homosexual life style and not a regular family is beyond me or the majority of the state. I guess it's time to wake up T.V. and report both sides of the story before people stop watching you like they have stopped reading the one sided news papers. -- James

I think it one sided of the people to allow the judge of a national event to express his anger as he did Not Professional at all. Our world has this same sex marriage junk shoved down our throats, that is a life-style not an ethnicity you are not born Gay. -- Mark

It is disappointing to hear that judges are stating that Miss California lost her right to the Miss USA title simply because she honestly expressed her views on same-sex marriage. What is becoming of our nation when you are blasted for staying true to who you are? The question was asked because it was controversial - it tested the contestant to see if she would stay true to her heart, even when her answer didn't agree with the judges views. If Miss California truly lost because she expressed her beliefs then the Miss USA pageant has lost its validity as a legitimate pageant. How sad. -- Heidi

Personally it's completly unfair what they are saying about Miss California. Perez asked a question, she answered the question from her heart and her opinion and upbringing, because she not feel the same way that Perez fills on the situation, or all other gay couples she is getting critizied. Thats unexceptable what happen to freedom of Speech, dont we live in America? I thought the answer she gave was great, she was not trying to upset anyone, and she stated that. That is how she was brought up. So Perez you are a Gay man Of course you are going to have your own opinion on gay marriage, and most the people upset by what she said were the gay community. -- Cassandra

The judge who asked the question was the one who started the "controversy" regarding gay marriage etc. In response, she was ABSOLUTELY WITHIN HER RIGHTS to voice her opinion. Lets face it, this gay rights stuff is getting out of our control. -- Julie

Perez Hilton is a joke. Just because someone doesn't share his opinion he slam Miss California. Miss California was very respectful and just shared HER opinion. That is the problem with the Pro gay marriage side, they just can't see that their is TWO sides to this debate. In California we voted twice now, the marjority does not want gay marriage in California, moved to another state if you want to marry the same sex. -- Rich

The judge at the Miss America contest obviously had a calculated question that was politicaly motivated, intolerant and had nothing to do with the spirit of the contest. No matter what the question, the contestants had every right to answer their opinion without any repercussions. -- Jeff

I applaud her sincere answer. She had no control of the question, but when asked, she spoke her views. Don't we live in a country that has a freedom of speech? The only hate speech that I heard was from Perez Hilton on his website, just because her answer was not what he expected. By the way , her answer is the majority of California Voters as well. -- Miguel

I applaud Miss California for answering the question based on her beliefs. I don’t believe this kind question should NOT have ever been asked in the first place and it definitely should NOT have been used against her in determining whether she wins or not. -- Guy

The question posed to Miss California was undeniably unfair, and someone would be offended no matter how she answered. In my opinion, the question was totally inappropriate. First, young girls watch Miss USA pageants, and I don't believe it is a subject that should be posed in such a forum. It was being used as a means by which to push an agenda, and this was not the time or place. Second, it is an extremely controversial topic that has people divided, and it functioned as a trap. If you watch carefully, Perez Hilton shakes his head in disapproval and then begins to write his scores. I believe he was the one who was biased. No matter what anyone's personal beliefs, one of the qualities that Miss USA should possess is integrity. I believe she exhibited poise and integrity in the face of sure opposition; thus, she embodied the essence of Miss USA. Go against your beliefs and forfeit integrity or express yourself honestly...What would you do? -- Diane

I don't believe this is an appropriate question for a pagent, however, I believe one should not be afraid to stand up for what they believe, isn't that freedom of speech and America? What about the hateful things Perez Hilton said about her on his blog after the pagent? Shouldn't tolerance go both ways? The freedom to disagree! -- Laurelyn

This country is turning in to a bunch of whiners. Whether I agree with her opinion or not, it is just that, "her opinion". What next? If you have an opinion you will be stoned by some opposing person or group for expressing it. Sounds third world to me. COME ON! Aren't we better than this. -- Eddie

the same sex question was loaded for good effect. the individual asking the question was on his script from the gay community. inappropriate subject for this venue. do i hear the word ambush! -- David

I applaud Kristen for being honest and speaking her mind, in a nice manner. She was raised with these values. No one should be offended with her beliefs. There has been alot of whining ever since proposition 8 failed. It failed - lets move on and try again another day. Additionally, Our politicians can learn from Kristens straightforward honesty. -- Nicolas

The question was inappropriate for the forum...Having said that, The answer was SPOT ON!! -- Richard

I feel that she was very right in her answering the question she was ask. The only thing bad about it was they ask her opinion and then didn't like her answer and held it against her. Just because she was trustful in her beliefs. -- Teresa

I'm not sure if her comments are the reason Miss California lost to Miss North Carolina, but if that is the reason I find it very uplifting. I myself am not homosexual but I have many close friends whom are and I believe love is love, and should be celebrated. There's far too little of it in the world and to deny two people the right to express their love for each other is wrong. Some people have said she has her right to her opinion, but they forget Miss America is a figure head in the public view and her opinion is considered to be a voice speaking for others. That voice should ring out with understanding and respect for all, encouraging hope and unity, not be based on outdated religious views which hurt others. -- Shelley

If she would have answered in support of same-sex marriage, she would be hearing it from the other side. It is a lose-lose situation for her. The question shouldn't have been asked, it is not important to know how a beauty contestant feels on such a sensitive matter. -- Alex

As of today, we still have freedom of speech. It seems like a few people would like to take that away from us if we don't agree with them. I am glad some are willing to say what they believe. I hope we will never loose that right. -- Virginia

I think it's totally hypocritical for the contest organizers to ask her a loaded question. She has her own opinion and it isn't a wrong or right answer. It's actually how most people feel (Prop 8) but they just won't publicly announce their belief's for fear of being ridiculed. She has the right to believe as she does even if it's not what certain people want to hear. -- Dave

I salute Carrie a having the courage to stand for her belief. She could have said otherwise and win the title, but she put faith first before anything else. To us,, you are already a winner. Kudos to you!!!! -- Gay

Way to go Miss California!!! She has every right to give her opinion of a "loaded" question. This country was founded on Biblical principles..God did not design marriage to NOT be between a man and woman. Proud of MISS CALI -- Sherrie

Carrie did the right thing. She was asked to give her OWN OPINION and she did so with poise and respect. It is sad that she lost the pageant because she was honest and showed integrity. Her morality and honesty should be commended and Perez Hilton should be chastised for knowing what her response would be and trapping her in an un-winnable question. Shame on him! For those that think Carrie seems bigoted please recognize that this is America, she is entitled to her opinion, and that same sex marriage was voted against (Prop 8) by Californians recently. Carries was just expressing the opinion of the majority of her state. -- Michael

I thought Miss USA's comments stating that marriage should be between a man and a woman were just fine. She was asked her opinion and gave it, and there is no reason why she should be criticized for that. If she had not been asked that specific question, she most likely would not have brought the subject up. -- Ted

I think she had all the rights to answer the way that she did. At least we do atill live in America. And I have been taught that we have the right to say what we want. As long as it dont hurt others. Called our rights in the good old U.S.of A -- Richard

I think if you're going to ask a question on such a sensitive subject, be prepared to hear the answer, whether it's same sex marriage, abortion, etc. It may not be what you want to hear, but I'm sure that wasn't the question she wanted to answer. I commend the contestant for not being afraid to state her opinion. -- Emily

On the comments or opinion of Miss California USA Carrie Prejean regarding same sex marriages, she made NO controversial statement as San Diego 6 has stated prior to airing the piece, rather she spoke her opinion and was shutdown for it by the militant gay's. She's still a winner in my eyes and others that prefer the truth. -- Tony

I fully support Carrie. Her answer was forthright and non controversial. She wasn't putting forward an agenda like the Gay Rights supporters, it was simply an honest opinion. Way to go Carrie keep your poise and your position. And you're beautiful. -- Robert

I believe that people should be able to choose who they spend their lives with, whether that is with someone of the same sex or opposite, however, Perez Hilton asked Miss California a question and she answered as honestly as possible. Isn't that what the question part of the competition is about. People need to stop making such a big deal out of this. -- Joe

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, although i dont agree with Miss Californias message, it is her opinion, and that is exactly what perez hilton asked her, for an opinion, not his answer. -- Aja

Good for Ms. California. Now if only the wippy city leaders spoke the truth maybe we could put an end to this disguting nonsense that gays have a right to marriage. -- James

It is sad that in society we vilify people for their opinion. It is sad that the liberals have such a strong hold on society that if you voice your opinion and it does not mix with theirs then you are a bad person. I support Ms. California and her courage to stick to her values, knowing that she would be beat down by the liberals and the national media. -- Darren

Well first of all same sex marriage should be treated as equality and be allowed in any state. But overall her opinion is her own and she can decided what she wants. People should not judge her on her decision everyone has different believes. Plus that was a hard question to answer especially on stage and in front of such large audience and media. -- Daniel

no offence marriage is between man and woman god made adam and eve not adam and steve -- Robbie

I'm proud of Carrie Prejean and what she had to say regarding same sex marriage. Coming from a state where this issue is so highly debated and having the confidence to stand by her decision no matter whether she won or not, says a lot about her character. Good for you Carrie! -- Tyler

I think it is sad they asked for her opinion and now they are condemning her for giving her opinion. -- Carol

I feel Ms. California was very brave in her statement. I also believe she could have answered the question differently as posed in Perez Hilton's video but who truly wants a role model who sits on the fence when it comes to important issues of today? -- Michael

I believe that Miss. California does have the right to state her opinion, but I believe that it was wrong to put every christian in the same category about same sex marriage. Not everyone shares the same views. That would be impossible. Thank you. -- Kathryn

I think Miss California has the right to her own views, but I think the way she answered the question was inappropriate because the Miss USA name is meant to unite and by answering in that way, all she did was push people away from her. -- Hayley

Do we not honor freedom of speech. How is it that when someone expresses a view relating to their "religeous beliefs" that comes into question? She in my opinion did right and i concur with her views. -- William

Miss California stated her beliefs about marriage - one man and one woman - bravely, and honestly. I admire her and may God continue to bless her with His strength. She should not be critized for her beliefs. -- Therea

Don't come down on Miss California because her answer to the question wasn't what some people wanted to hear. She is entitled to her opinion. Maybe the question wasn't an appropriate question to ask at an event like this. Perez Hilton should not have asked the question if he wasn't ready to hear the answer. Never ask a question if you don't know what the answer will be. it should not have cost her the crown. -- Pamela

I am proud of Miss California's response. The judge was shamful for his horrible reaction after her answer. What a horrid judge. -- Sherie

Yeah she has the right to her opinion.  She can stand up there and say she hates black people too.  She answered with her honest, bigot opinion.  But she deserves to lose because we don't want a bigot who is against constitutional rights to represent our country as Miss USA.  Nothing wrong with her stating her opinion.  I hope she made it to her White Power meeting on time.

While I am also troubled by the unprofessional and vindictive nature of Hilton's actions, I think that this situation is one of those "in the wrong place at the wrong time" moments.  Such was the case with Anita Bryant, and eventually I think this will be viewed similarly.
What really catches my attention here is how almost everyone defending Prejean is outraged because she "was herself", "spoke what she believed", "was honest", etc.  She got the blunt end of a great deal of pent-up anger and decades (if not centuries) of wrong, hateful, cruel treatment of a minority.  Imagine having bottles thrown at you, being beaten or tear-gassed, simply because you were gay (or perceived to be gay).  I have endured that and more. The blacks had it harder because there was no way to hide their "differences".  Eventually the tide turned and civil rights became guaranteed under the law, but we as a nation are still healing from those injuries.  The same will be true for those of us who are gay, and occasionally someone will be the victim of lashing out.  Hilton does not represent gay people any more than Bush represented Republicans.  Nor does Prejean does not represent all Christians.
Was it a set-up?  Yes!  Can good come of this thing?  Absolutely!  Let's talk and treat one another as we want to be treated. Everyone has had their turn to be a victim.  Fortunately, this was just a beauty pageant and more bad TV.  The real story is that people in this country have lost jobs, been denied housing, lived in fear for their safety, and even died because they did not fit into the current definition of "mainstream'. Gays do not seek acceptance by religion; they demand the same right to enter into a civil contract (a.k.a. union), with all its rights and responsibilities, as afforded other citizens of this country.  Obama said he does not want to redefine the definition of marriage.  He does support civil unions. To do anything less is truly immoral and un-American.

Why are they asking these kind of questions anyway???
They asked for her thoughts and she answered. She is not going to answer just to make him/them happy! They will never be happy. Adam and Eve NOT ADAM & STEVE!!!!!

Miss California's courage and character are inspirational in a time, such as today, when so many are fearful of what others think, distorting their beliefs and principals so as to be politically correct.  She showed heroism by answering the question as it was asked without  using evasive wording, yet, she was gentle.  True, it may have cost her the title, but she won something even more precious, the respect of a nation.  As for Donald Trump's team that selected the judge in question, they should be dismissed for incompetence.
